BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING, 1998 Scarce Uncorrected Proof Copy: Uncorrected Proofs are distributed for READING and review PRIOR to the release of the first printing. This copy is in extraordinary condition for one of the early Harry Potter series uncorrected proofs, and is extremely rare. The uncorrected proof for The Chamber of Secrets had a presumed print run of only about 200 pieces, figures provided by the publisher. Complete with the Bloomsbury copyright page and the complete number line of 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. This book was issued BEFORE the first printing (see below for the definition of an Uncorrected Proof). It is estimated that 200 copies were published for this proof, with fewer that survived over the years as many were tossed. DEFINITION OF AN UNCORRECTED PROOF: In publishing jargon, a proof is the preliminary iteration of a book, intended for a limited audience. Its purpose is to allow for final edits. The proofs can also help to build and maintain buzz about a book before its official release date, generate some early reviews and have potential readers eager to get their hands on the title. A galley proof or uncorrected proof may still have errors or areas open to change. It is generally bound differently than the final product, often only spiral-bound, and missing much of the polish of the eventual published version, opting instead for plain, often coarse paper. Inclusion of proposed publication information (date, price, etc.) can also be included. Usually the proof consists of text only, and is devoid of any art or illustration that may be present in the final published version. If a book is successful and does well upon final publication, or if it goes out-of-print early but develops a fan-base or cult following, an uncorrected proof can become a valuable prize for collectors. Part of the appeal is their scarcity, and the fact that they will sometimes have slightly different text from the final piece. (Beth Carswell, ABE BOOKS) Of course with the Harry Potter books, there was such a craze surrounding the publication of each new title that these pre-publication proofs were extremely sought after. After the third book in the series, the content of the series was meant to be kept secret until the official publication day and these proofs were no longer produced. Few copies of this title survived as the phenomenon was still building at this point. By the time this title was getting ready for release, the Harry Potter series had taken off, with everyone waiting and anticipating the next book. The phenomena was born. The few uncorrected proofs that were released to select individuals were poured over, read, pass around, and re-read as they were extremely scarce (imagine being only 1 of 200 of the privileged few who got to preview this book!). Although the print run for uncorrected proofs was nearly the same for the first three book titles (about 200 copies per book title which is already extremely scarce), less of the first two titles as uncorrected proofs in the Harry Potter series appeared to have survived in collectible condition. This copy is in very clean condition with only some slight toning to the outer wraps, one small rubbed corner edge, and with only some slight softened creasing to the outer wraps. The book is internally very clean with No owner names, No inscriptions, No stains, No handling marks, No writing, No discolored pages, No dog eared pages. (it is very unusual for uncorrected proofs to be internally clean as most likely this book was passed around to several people all in heightened anticipation of the new title in the series). Only a scarce few of the uncorrected proofs have come to market in recent years, with this copy being well priced taking its rarity and condition into account. The book was left unrestored, a true depiction of the Harry Potter phenomena. Please see the many detailed images. Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Meier And Sons Rare Books, Ridgefield, Connecticut, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
Orders usually ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required. All books are shipped using full insurance. Insurance is calculated at the USPS rate of $1.00 Per $100 of value and will be included in the shipping charge.
