The boards are beautifully clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean, with light foxing mainly to the top edge. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean and unmarked. No creases or tears. With a couple of newspaper cutting loosely inserted (please see scans) ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 15s net. The dustwrapper is complete with no creases, chips or tears - just the extremities and corners very slightly rubbed and creased. Back of dustwrapper very lightly discoloured (being a white background). Bright red colour to the front panel completely unfaded, and just very slightly faded on the spine. Complete with the rare Book Society Recommendation wraparound band. Dustwrapper unusually crisp and bright. ***224 pages. 204mm x 136mm. ***'Stanley Middleton FRSL (1 August 1919 - 25 July 2009) was a British novelist. He was born in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire, in 1919 and educated at High Pavement School, Stanley Road, Nottingham, and later at University College Nottingham. Middleton started writing while at university and in 1958 published his first novel "A Short Answer". Alongside his work as an author, he taught English at High Pavement Grammar School for many years. In 1974, his novel "Holiday" won the Booker Prize. In 2008, "Her Three Wise Men" was published, this being his 44th novel, and the last to be published during his lifetime.' (Wiki) ***'This is the story of Thomas Harris, miner's son and Midland's schoolmaster, who struggles to gain recognition as a composer. Stanley Middleton's entertaining first novel, A Short Answer, also set in the Midlands, was published by New Authors Limited (Imprint of Hutchinson). It was praised for its cut-and-thrust, often amusing dialogue and the vitality of the writing. The Daily Telegraph described Mr. Middleton's talent as 'out and away the most original that the New Authors scheme has unearthed.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A near fine first edition copy of the author's uncommon second published novel, in its original dustwrapper (complete with the scarce Book society Recommendation wraparound band) in very nice bright collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
