About this Item
Oblong octavo. Approx. 8x11". 80pp. Illustrated tan stapled wrappers with black lettering on the cover. The publication is an early catalog of gymnasium and other assorted sporting equipment from A.G. Spalding & Bros. The internationally famous sporting goods company is now known simply as Spalding, as is most associated with the manufacture of basketballs. The illustrated front cover depicts a wide range of sporting activities including ice sports, gym activities, baseball, cycling and tennis. The catalog is profusely illustrated throughout with countless figures showing the company's range of products, organized by category, and demonstrates their use. The products range from uniforms and athletic clothes, to weights, various types of gym and exercise equipment, bowling pins, boxing gloves and punching bags. The final section (p.65-79) contains exercise suggestions and other lifestyle, diet, and health tips. There are company advertisements on the final page. Front wrapper detached but present. Front cover with chipping and some tears along the edges. Back cover is missing. Book block tight. Interior overall clean and bright. Wrappers in poor, interior in very good+ condition overall. Wrappers protected by modern mylar. Quite scarce. *Although there is no printed date on the catalog, based on the fact that the cover advertises Spalding as the "Official League Ball" of the National League, and that this was known to be the case for the seasons 1892-1896, we have dated the publication about 1894.
