The 1958 edition, first printing, of this comprehensive directory to Singapore, issued on the eve of the colony's transition to full internal self-governance. The dozens of sectional maps highlight leading governmental, administrative, social, and economic institutions, and the text adds supporting historical notes and geographic detail. Reflecting the evolution of the Singaporean political system, two of the folding maps delineate legislative assembly and local government electoral divisions. Other maps show the Central Area's one-way traffic system, postal districts, and the Bukit Timah nature reserve. The annual Directory was first published in 1954, with many years going through multiple printings. Large octavo. With 12 plates (4 colour, 8 half-tone), 7 maps (6 folding, 3 colour), pp. 115 of sectional maps in text. Original pictorial card wrappers, spine lettered in white, front cover lettered in pink and white, inner covers with maps extending onto flaps. Wrappers worn, loss at head of spine, contents and folding maps well preserved: a very good copy.
