With an eight-page insert in Kanji, an appreciation by Postwar Japanese photographer Tadahiko Hayashi. Brilliant photo essay on blind itinerant female musicians ("goze"), following them four seasons as they travel from village to village, hoping to gain shelter and food in return for performing some folk songs. Fully illustrated in full-bleed black and white images printed in gravure - powerful photographs with a grainy quality and dark edges perfectly suited to the subject. A book firmly in the vanguard of early 70's Japanese photography, and yet a barely recognized title. Very scarce - no copies are listed in OCLC. In very good condition overall - book very clean and bright, dust jacket fine, some age darkening and scattered light spotting to the slipcase.
