The architecture of some public buildings exhibits a commitment to economic restraint and a subordination to an international aesthetic of dutifulness. Other public buildings exhibit a heightened sensitivity to place - to topography, architectural setting, and select cultural inheritances. The decision-making processes that led up to the implementation of such projects are often insufficiently appreciated. The 20 contributions to this volume, focused on Central Europe, address the problem of defining and locating public buildings as architectural expressions in a protracted period of transition between feudal and modern constitutional social orders.

About the Authors

Maximilian Hartmuth ist Projektleiter (2018–23) des ERC-Projekts „Islamic Architecture and Orientalizing Style in Habsburg Bosnia 1878–1918“ an der Universit�t Wien. Nach Studien und Arbeitsaufenthalten in Wien, Sarajevo, Belgrad und Istanbul, forscht und lehrt er seit 2012 zur Architekturgeschichte Mittel- und S�dosteuropas am Wiener Institut f�r Kunstgeschichte.

Richard Kurdiovsky, geboren 1971 in Wien, Studium der Kunstgeschichte in Wien, freier Mitarbeiter der Architektursammlung der Albertina, seit 2005 Mitarbeiter der Kommission f�r Kunstgeschichte der �AW. Forschungsschwerpunkte: mitteleurop�ische Architektur des Barock, des 19. und fr�hen 20. Jahrhunderts.

Julia R�diger war von 2018 bis 2020 Forscherin im und stellvertretende Projektleiterin des ERC-Projekts Islamic Architecture and Orientalizing Style in Habsburg Bosnia 1878–1918 an der Universit�t Wien. Seit M�rz 2017 ist sie Assistenzprofessorin am Institut f�r Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur an der Katholischen Privat-Universit�t Linz und forscht zu Strategien der politischen Repr�sentation in Architektur und Denkmal im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert.

Georg Vasold arbeitet als Kunsthistoriker in Wien. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt ist die Kunsttheorie in Mitteleuropa zwischen 1900 und 1930.
