As one reviewer said: 'Robinson mixes action with cynicism and hard-bitten humour that has you halfway between tears and laughter.' The story is sometimes funny because humour came easily to young men - and so did death. It's 1918, and Stanley Woolley, C.O. of Goshawk Squadron, sets about replacing their schoolboy notions of sport, fair play, chivalry in the sky, with his own belief: that there are only two kinds of fighter pilot: victims and murderers. Goshawk Squadron was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and is as convincing - and as splendidly incorrect politically - now as when it was first published. ; Goshawk Squadron is a 1971 black comedy novel by Derek Robinson which tells of the adventures of a squadron of SE5a pilots from January 1918 to the time of the German spring offensive of March 1918. Review
A terrific impact . . . Goshawk Squadron has the authoritative ring of a little classic on the subject of war. (Observer)
From the beginning, the feel of this book is totally authentic . . . The comedy is real, too, not gallows humour. I laughed aloud, several times. And was, in the end, reduced to tears. (Daily Telegraph)
One of the most powerful indictments of war I have ever read . . . Quietly savage, funny and heart-breaking . . . A book which must once and for all explode the myth of honourable warfare. (Sunday Telegraph)
Shocking, but by no means insensitive, this novel of Derek Robinson's is a remarkable story of war in the air. (Peter Townsend)
