Add to basketFranklin Center, PA: The Franklin Library, 1979. First Edition and Limited Edition (three years later, in 1982, Franklin Library issued another edition of the title, that one signed by Heller, but of course not the first edition). With the quite scarce accompanying eight-fold publisher's pamphlet (see scans). Hearty octavo, 521 pp., illustrated with distinctive style by Steven Stroud; the Heller portrait on the eight-fold is by Michael Deas. As New; immaculate and pristine. Franklin's lavish leather binding of the First Edition of Heller's tale of Bruce Gold, an ambitious but fearful, conventional but iconoclastic, intellectual but misadventurous professor who becomes America's first Jewish Secretary of State. Full rich red top grain leather, gilt decorated and imprinted, spine panels rib divided, All Edges Gilt, moire endpapers of a truly beautiful - but rather un-nameable color, and a gold satin page-marker ribbon. The gilt is 22 karat; the paper is 50-pound Olde Style Cream; text set in 10-point Aster type. The Franklin Library, doing what they did best. As New; pristine and flawless, and protectively archived since arrival; page-marker has in fact never been moved. Please review scans. With Heller's "A Special Message to the members of The First Edition Society" prefacing the novel (with laser printed signature), and the seldom-retained eightfold "Notes from the Editors" which arrived with original shipments of the piece. This rare pamphlet, unlike the flawless book, does show some sunning and a crinkle. Please see all scans. Show this one off on the cocktail table; get a market copy to read. l-frnkln2.
