Add to basketBroughton, Rhoda. "Good-Bye, Sweetheart!" New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1872. First U.S. edition. 12mo, pp. [1-3] 4-437 [438: blank] [439-444: publisher's ads]. Original terra-cotta decorative cloth, front and rear panels stamped in black and blind, spine panel stamped in black, blind and gold. Some wear along spine ends and outer joints but holding firm, a decent copy with clean interior, well-printed on good paper. #1559. $45. ". unwise love ends in picturesquely lingering death for the heroine Lenore Herrick." -- Sutherland, Companion to Victorian Fiction, p. 89. Wolff 862b, noting that the U.K. publisher, Bentley, sent "early proof sheets . to Appleton." A somewhat unusual arrangement in this period -- before international copyright agreements -- when cross-Atlantic "piracy" was the norm. Broughton's great popularity evidently motivated Appleton to pay for the right to bring out the American edition exclusively.
