Thick 8vo. Pp. xx, 266. Frontispiece, illustrations, index. Printed on laid paper with tissue guards at illustrations. Blind stamped green cloth with gilt-decorated cover and spine, which features elaborate floral design. Fore-edge untrimmed. Owner's address label to ffep, else a very attractive copy with great shelf appeal. This is a significant volume in the Connoisseur's Library series. Lavish volumes, they represent a former era's attention to high-quality book production. qualities of gold and silver, alloys, carats and weights, working them. Nearly all historical aspects of the subject is handled with superb authority, including "Peasant Jewellery" "Barbaric Jewellery, metalwork of the Mycenaean and Etruscan periods and significant high points in metalwork, i.e., the Treasure of Bernaz and The Alfred Jewel, the Ring of Ethelwulf, Tara Brooch, and works in general: mazers, chalices, salts and salvers, etc. Hallmarking is covered as well.
