127 printed pages + 1 page publisher's adverts. Chromolithographed frontispiece and additional title page. Some considerable age-toning and browning throughout. All edges gilt. Charming contemporary ink inscription on back of frontispiece, "Rebecca Alice Nixon. A prize for good conduct at school". 39 x 62mm. Original blue cloth. Spine with gilt scrolling foliate decoration and gilt lettering "Golden Keys"; covers with embossed foliate decoration, circular and triple fillet borders and foliate corner pieces -the front cover in gilt with gilt lettering, "The Golden Library. Golden Keys". Rubbing to hinges, edges and corners. Some of the gilt work has worn thin. Later republished by The Yorkshire Joint Stock Publishing and Stationery Co., Limited, late Webb, Mullington and Co., Otley [England], between 1850 and 1870. William E. Bownas is only known to have printed one other book, "A money order instruction book: to which is appended all the information necessary to be known for obtaining money orders" and can be considered a very obscure provincial printer Not in Bondy, nor Spielmann.
