First US edition. Fine, stiff copy, just about impeccable, in like dust jacket. A review copy with a review slip and a glossy photograph of the author. The review slip reveals that the actual year of the first US edition is 1978, not, as widely stated, the copyright year of 1977, which is the date of the UK edition. Durrell paints a portrait of a Mauritius and the neighboring island of Rodrigues still rich in endemic species, although the dodo is not among the living. Rodrigues was itself home to a lesser known bird also driven to extinction, the Rodrigues solitaire. Seller Inventory # 5311
