Keep in mind the true first printing was published in 1953 by Alfred Knopf in the USA, and 1954 in the UK by Michael Joseph. So this copy would be the first Dial edition, published in 1963, yet being the ninth printing, it was published in 1978. As for this copy, the book is near fine. Bright, tight and clean. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Pages and endpapers are clean. Navy panels stamped in gilt on spine. Book has two minor flaws keeping it from grading fine: a touch of shelf-rubbing to crown (barely) and minimal, minor scant foxing (very faint) on page edges (barely.) As for the original DJ, it still maintains its $8.95 price on flap. Attractive Guy Fleming designed DJ is bright and attractive with one flaw, soiling along the DJ spine's front edge. A touch on edge of rear flap interior. All flaws noted. A very attractive copy of Baldwin's first book and magnum opus. NF/VG. Seller Inventory # 003937
