Item description from seller

A beautifully produced record of the Maudslays' 1894 travels through Guatemala and Mexico, illustrated with their own photographs of Chichén Itzá, Palenque, Tikal, and other Maya sites before modern excavation. Alfred Maudslay was among the pioneers of Maya archaeology and archaeological photography, and many of the monuments pictured here were still largely overgrown and little known outside specialist circles. Written with his wife Anne for a general audience, the book combines serious fieldwork with travel narrative and remains one of the most attractive nineteenth-century accounts of the ancient Maya world. Scarce. 4to, xx, 289pp. Errata slip, index, and with 43 unnumbered leaves of photographic plates in gravure; 11 inserted maps and plans, several double-page, including the large folding map of Guatemala and the adjacent countries; numerous illustrations throughout, including chromolithographs, photogravures, and line drawings. Publisher's cloth-backed glazed pictorial boards, spine lettered in gilt, vignette illustration on front cover. Board edges rubbed and a bit scuffed, with some toning and smudging to boards. Endpapers lightly toned; otherwise clean and complete internally. Very good.
