Pratt, Samuel Jackson (1749-1814), miscellaneous writer, mainly under the pseudonym of Courtney Melmoth; was ordained in the English Church, but soon abandoned the clerical profession and appeared in 1773 on the stage at Dublin under the name of Courtney Melmoth; failed as an actor, adopted literature as a profession, 1774; traded in Bath for some years as a bookseller, several of his plays produced at Drury Lane, London; published miscellaneous works in prose and verse.
