About this Item
First Edition ( 'First Published In 1959 By Barrie And Rockliff' ). This is another book I have for sale that was owned by the renowned actor, balladeer and political activist, Theodore Bikel, better known to some as Tevye. This is also another one of the books that he purchased while he lived in England. Mr. Bikel's small bookplate is affixed to the front inside cover. There is also a little green bookseller label from Foyles, the famous Chairing Cross bookstore in London. It is affixed near the bottom edge of the front inside cover. Both the book and the dust jacket are in excellent condition. Bravo Mr. Bikel. You can see the blue covers in the photos. They have a nice textured look. I don't see any soiling or staining. There is one tiny bump just off the bottom edge of the front cover. There is a slight bit of crinkling at the top edge of the spine. That is the totality of the wear on the covers of the book. The silver lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The edges and corners are in very good shape. There aren't any stains on the page edges. And the book is solidly bound from cover to cover, no cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages or between the covers and any of the pages. The covers are nicely tight. The pages are exceptionally clean, and not toned. I've scrolled through them several times and found only one instance of a small, light stain, far from the print. I'm not finding any creasing of any kind. Nor are there any markings. The only attachments are the aforementioned bookplate and little bookseller label. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos it's in very nice shape. There is an inconspicuous thin scratch on the front cover. There's little bit of wear at the top edge of the spine with teeny tiny loss. The jacket is free of stains, there's a little bit of handling soiling or shading on the white rear cover. The flaps are in solid condition. There is a very thin strip of toning at the top edge of both flaps. The top edge of the rear flap has a little bit of crinkling. There's also a small bluish spot on the front flap and the bottom corner of the front flap has a light crease. The flaps are white but clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. The second page of the book which is sort of a half-title page, also includes the following description: When Barbara Marston was six months old she was put into a Home; She was seventeen before she saw her mother again. In the years between she was seldom out of trouble. From a school for maladjusted children she went to a mental hospital and from there to hostels in London, to approved schools, and to prison. At sixteen she was on the streets of Soho. It is a book that will shock many. It does not set out to condemn the system which tried to help her and failed, nor does it suggest she was the typical victim of a broken home. It simply tells the story of a girl whose resentment against her parents drove her against society, and how, at seventeen, she faced the task of building a new and different life.
