Item description from seller

Getty Museum Los Angeles. London 2012. 22,8 x 30,5 cm, 96 illuminierte Seiten, 42 Initialen, Halbleder, in archivbeständigem Schuber. Aufl. 1000 Expl. 980,00 ¿ Title: Illuminating the End of Time: The Getty Apocalypse Manuscript Author: Morgan, Nigel J ISBN: 9781606060711 Description: Los Angeles: Getty Publications, 2012. 33cm., hardcover, 180pp. 82 color, 34 b&w illus. Summary: The visionary nature of the Apocalypse¿the biblical book of Revelation¿along with its detailed descriptions of the end of the world have long made it ideal for illustration. Illuminated texts of the Apocalypse were particularly popular in thirteenth-century England, and the copy in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, with its lively narrative miniatures, stands as a testament to the artistic heights achieved during that period. In this richly illustrated book, all eighty-two of the manuscript¿s images are reproduced in color for the first time. They are accompanied by a full commentary. A general introduction to the history of thirteenth-century English illustrated Apocalypse manuscripts is followed by a succinct study of the artistic context of the Getty¿s manuscript, as well as a consideration of its style and date. The rest of the commentary is devoted to a stylistic and iconographic analysis of the manuscript¿s images; there is also a complete translation of the text Dyson Perrins Apocalypse Unknown English, probably London, about 1255 - 1260 Tempera colors, gold leaf, colored washes, and ink on parchment bound between pasteboard covered with red morocco 12 9/16 x 8 7/8 in. MS. LUDWIG III 1 Saint John the Divine's vision of the events leading to the Second Coming of Christ at the end of time, commonly known as the Apocalypse, inspired the creation of many illuminated manuscripts in England in the 1200s. Western Europeans particularly popularized the text at this time because of recent cataclysmic events, including the Tartars' invasion of Russia in the 1230s and the fall of Jerusalem to the Moslems in 1244. These events raised fears that the end of time was at hand. Every page of the Dyson Perrins Apocalypse, named after a previous owner of the manuscript, contains a brief passage from the Apocalypse written in black ink, a portion of a popular commentary written by a monk named Berengaudus in red ink, and a half-page miniature. The miniatures, executed in a sophisticated tinted drawing technique, faithfully follow Saint John's exceptionally vivid descriptions of his visions and do.…
