'Maestro Georges de La Tour, pittore [.] si rende odioso alla gente per la quantità di cani che alleva, tanto levrieri quanto épagneuls, come se fosse il signore del luogo; caccia le lepri fra le messi, rovinandole e schiacciandole'. Questo, il solo giudizio su La Tour che ci sia giunto dai suoi contemporanei. Dove scoprire l'artista che dipinse il Giobbe o il San Sebastiano? Gli archivi hanno tramandato oltre un centinaio di documenti che lo riguardano; documenti che stabiliscono alcuni punti fissi, ma che non possono renderne la psicologia. La nascita di un figlio, l'affitto di una casa, la cessione di una rendita, una firma il giorno in cui un vicino dà in sposa la figlia o prende a prestito qualche staio di grano: moneta spicciola, in un tempo in cui tutto avviene davanti al notaio o al parroco. Ma nessuna lettera, nessuna confidenza di un appassionato d'arte o di un amico. Dobbiamo immaginare La Tour partendo da quelle poche sgradevoli righe.
