Item description from seller

Format is 9.5 inches by 11.75 inches. xx, 717, [3] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations (many in color). Footnotes. References. Appendix A. Appendix B. Index. Classic comprehensive text contains 237 detailed color and black & white photographic images taken by the multispectral scanner on Landsats I, II and III, and the thematic mapper on Landsats IV and V. Text is arranged by geomorphic theme: tectonic; volcanic; fluvial; delta; coastal; kast and lakes; eolian; glacial; planetary landforms. Nicholas Martin Short was a geologist who helped establish the fields of shock metamorphism and terrestrial meteorite impact crater studies, and who later made contributions to lunar sample investigations and the use of remote sensing in terrestrial geology. With his brand-new Ph.D. in sedimentation and geochemistry, he joined the AEC's Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's Plowshare Program, which was investigating the peaceful uses of atomic energy, and he became the only geoscientist in a large group of nuclear engineers and solid-state physicists who were busy making large explosions in the Nevada desert. Robert (Rob) William Blair, Jr. worked with Petro-Nuclear and the US Geological Survey in WY and CO. In 1975, he received his Ph.D. in geology from the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO. For 28 years he taught in the geology department at Fort Lewis College, Durango, CO. He has over 50 publications including 5 books, 22 peer reviewed papers. These include: "Geomorphology from Space-A Global Overview of Regional Landforms". Geomorphology from Space was designed for use by the remote sensing science and educational communities to study landforms and landscapes. The core of this book is a gallery of space imagery consisting of 237 plates, each treating a geographic region where a particular landform theme is exemplified. Commentary, photographs, locator maps, and sometimes a geologic map accompany each plate. Geomorphology from Space: A Global Overview of Regional Landforms, was published by NASA as a successor to the two earlier works on the same subject: Mission to Earth: LANDSAT views the Earth, and ERTS-1: A New Window on Our Planet. The purpose of the book is threefold: first, to serve as a stimulant in rekindling interest in descriptive geomorphology and landforms analysis at the regional scale; second, to introduce the community of geologists, geographers, and others who analyze the Earth's surficial forms to the practical value of space-acquired remotely sensed data in carrying out their research and applications; and third, to foster more scientific collaboration between geomorphologists who are studying the Earth's landforms and astrogeologists who analyze landforms on other planets and moons in the solar system, thereby strengthening the growing field of comparative planetology.…
