Item description from seller

First Edition. In Two Volumes. Half titles present. Bound in publisher's dark-green morocco-backed cloth lettered in gilt to the spines. The complete set of 25 individual parts bound in two volumes of the most important work on roses of the 20th century lavishly detailed with fine botanical plates and meticulous descriptions in Latin and English mostly by the Kew botanist, John Gilbert Baker. Illustrated with 132 tissue-guarded fine full colour chromolithograph plates after watercolours by Alfred Parsons, R.A. Volume 1 - viii, i-xxv, [1], ix-xxvii, [1] 243 pp; Volume 2 - [1]; [iv], 245-551 [1]. RIX, THE ART OF THE BOTANIST, 1981: "The first great colour-printed book of the twentieth century it still stands unrivalled, both as an account of the species and as a source of illustrations of wild roses." Issued in 25 parts between September 15, 1910 and March 14, 1914, the publisher's original printed part wrappers for the original parts are bound at the rear of each volume. The pink 'Instructions to the Binder' (recommending the order of the sections and their accompanying plates to be split between two volumes once all the parts had been received) is bound in at the end of Volume 1 together with interim half-title/title to Volume 1. A VG+ (or better) set. Clean interior. Firmly bound. Some mild foxing. Tissue guards and all plates present and in excellent order. A former owner's name in Volume 1 only. Some rubbing to the morocco spines. An exquisite 2-volume set of one of the most important books on roses. The result of more than twenty years of Willmott's exhaustive studies of roses from both renowned botanical and her own extensive gardens, The Genus Rosa supplanted the works of Lindley and Redouté as the most complete and scientifically accurate monograph on roses of the day. Praising the production as "a joy to the bibliophile" in a review from the period, Gertrude Jekyll wrote of the illustrations, "It would appear that a possible Redouté only arises once in a hundred years. Happily we have one in Mr. Alfred Parsons" (The Quarterly Review, vol. 221, no. 441, October 1914). Further photographs available upon request.…
