Item description from seller

304 pages, 52 black-and-white photographs, many very interesting advertisements and a map of Kenya. bound in black and white illustrated card, with adverts inside both front and back. The author, Ronald Owen Preston, to quote from his foreword "sailed from Bombay with a batch of a few hundred Indian workmen, to help in the construction of the Victoria Nyanza Railway, which was to be built to carry civilization into darkest Africa" and add another Colony to fly the BRITISH FLAG". The date and edition are a guess derived from a Google search. The book is actually an account of the building of the railway, beginning in 1897, but with many excursions into description and illustrations of of the land and its peoples. The rear hinge between text and cover is beginning to split at the top and bottom but this remains an essentially sound copy of an item very rarely offered.
