Colin G. Maggs has a particular love for the Swindon to Bath line. In this detailed book he records the varied history of this stretch of railway, which was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel as the last link between London, Bath and Bristol.
The GWR Swindon to Bath Line captures the drama of the railway's construction - recounting in detail the difficulties faced by engineers and navvies alike, and vividly bringing to life the excitement of those early railway days. Maggs describes the line's opening and its dramatic effect on the district, and also comments on passenger train services, locomotives, engine sheds and signalling as well as recalling the many accidents that have happened.
Appendices give financial and traffic information, along with reminiscences from railwaymen who worked the line. Fully illustrated with maps and over 200 images of every aspect of the Swindon to Bath line, this fact-filled and authoritative study provides a rare insight into the development of a typical part of the British railway.
