Unpaginated, 13 1/8" H x 10 1/2" D. Medium green cloth covered bevelled boards (spine faded to brown), with dark green lettering and gilt decoration on spine and front board, top edge gilt. Dark brown endpapers. From a limited edition of 500 copies, this one with "Review" written in place of a number and the initials "M.B." (Morison Brothers?). 48 b&w/mono plates, including 8 photogravures - all present. The photogravures have tissue-guards and are printed on a parchement-effect stock that has tanned lightly with some darkening at the very edges. The other plates are printed on the same coated stock as the text pages. Each plate is followed by a section of descriptive text with a decorative initial capital and there are a few additional b&w illustrations, including a photographic portrait of William Simpson. "It was the making of these drawings of old places in Glasgow that first awakened the archaeological instinct in me. This was assisted by some architectural knowledge I had acquired before beginning in lithography. Some (views show) buildings and streets which 'city improvements' have swept away, or changed so that the appearance of the place is much altered. Some of the drawings owe their interest, not from showing buildings of 'Old Glasgow', but from their giving a glimpse of the ground which as since become 'New Glasgow'. There ar views on the outskirts which in the 'forties' might be said to be in the country, but are now covered with houses and streets. The view taken from near the Shields Bridge is a good example of this transformation." From William Simpson's "Introductory". There is a separation between the page gatherings at illustration XIII - pages are firmly held in the binding, wrinkling at the top/bottom of the spine, light edge wear - a little more at the corners of the boards, browning to the spine, light fading to the edges of the rear board cloth, some light to moderate rubbing and scuffs on the boards, a few small faint liquid marks on the boards, some scattered light foxing marks on the verso of the free rear endpaper. **Please note: This is a heavy book and will require extra postage outside of Canada/USA.**.
