Item description from seller

21 x 30cm 264pp near fine, as new paperback, described by Dr. Jill Lloyd OM (FRG) thus: 'Leicester City's collection of German Expressionist Art plays a unique role in promoting the worldwide understanding of German Expressionism'. The publication of the new book coincides with the 80th anniversary of Leicester s seminal wartime exhibition Mid European Art - the first major exhibition of German Expressionism to be held in Britain. Since then, Leicester s collection of German Expressionist art has grown to include over 550 items, through purchases, gifts and bequests. Notable highlights including the 1955 bequest of the art historian Dr Rosa Schapire of works by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and the stunning gift of over 60 artworks presented by Michael Brooks in 2009.A beautifully produced catalogue made possible by the largesse of an anonymous donor. With great pride, in his foreword City Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby writes: 'Leicester's collection of world-renowned Expressionist artworks is one of the largest outside Germany. It is the legacy of museum director Trevor Thomas, whose extraordinary wartime exhibition 'Mid-European Art' in 1944, ispired the founding of such a unique collection with the purchase of Franz Marc's 'Red Woman'.' Here is the history of how the collection has been built through time. With essays by Dr. Dorothy Price: 'An introduction to German Expressionism, with a review of Leicester City's German Expressionist art collection' and 'Degenerate Art' by Nicola Stratton Tyler. Colour plus black and white reproductions with fulsome descriptions of each artist - some of those included are Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Lyonel Feininger, Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.…
