Two volumes, complete. First Edition. Demy 8vo (8 x 5 ins) pp [38], 429 + iv, 512. Bound in contemporary full sheep with raised bands to spines panelled in gold with fillets and ornaments, double red and black morocco labels. Boards with ornate gilt borders around outside. Edges of spines well rubbed, endpapers soiled. Both vols carry owner's name of Col. Johnston with date 1856 and his bookplate. First endpapers loose in vol I; some underlining in the text in orange pencil to last few leaves in vol II. Subscribers list at front of vol I. In vol II Butler describes the characteristics of "a modern Politician", amongst which we find A Clown, A Mountebank, A Wittal, A Squire of Dames. Sound famililar?. Seller Inventory # 18447
