CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: At the outset of the Civil War, DuBose volunteered as a private and quickly advanced within the ranks to cavalry officer. DuBose was attached to Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry. Less than a year in the field he was discharged by a surgeon's certificate, but remained part of the army's non-commissioned staff. He later described his functions as "recruiting and labor impressment". After the war he became a writer and editor, contributing well-received works on politics and biography, including this on Major-General Joe Wheeler who was Chief of Cavalry for the Army of the Tennessee. DuBose never swerves from the Wheeler thread in weaving the story of the campaigns in which that officer participated. In addition to official correspondence reproduced in the text, several letters of junior officers and men reflect nuances of the story. Approximately one-half of the volume deals with the 1864 campaigns. DuBose joined the majority of his contemporaries in writing of Braxton Bragg from a critical viewpoint.".
