FOUR VOLUMES UNIFORMLY BOUND. New endpapers. Old armorial book-plate on pastedown of Volume 1. Rebacked in brown leather, leather gilt titles, dated at foot of spine. Covers blind-stamped with designs, central panel (see photos). Title-pagesd with red lettering, frontispiece portraits. Volume 1 is missing the title-page and Volume 2 is missing the frontispiece, BOTH WITH FACSIMILE PAGES from other copies. Otherwise the books are collated complete. A total of four folding maps, one large one of China and Corea (Photo); fifteen plates, eleven of which are folding, and a double page musical illustration. All maps and plates are in very nice condition, including the large folding map in Volume 1. Text block is clean throughout as well. John-Baptiste du Halde (1674-1743) was a French Jesuit historian. He never travelled to China, but became the leading authority in Europe on the country. He collected seventeen missionaries' reports of their service in China. From those, he composed an encyclopedic survey of the history, culture and society of China, Manchuria, and Corea (present-day Korea). . 509, 438, 496, 464pp. Size: Crown Octavo.
