Softcover edition published around 1952 featuring a colorful front cover illustration of a teacher guiding three students of various ages in the use of the abacus. Good condition overall. The front cover shows a small crease to the lower corner, a light semi-circular surface abrasion, and the rear cover has a faint red stain at the upper corner. The staple binding remains firm. An organization stamp on the title page has been neatly marked out. The interior pages are clean and unmarked. The Fundamental Operations in Bead Arithmetic: How to Use the Chinese Abacus by Tak Ming Kwa is a practical guide to mastering the suanpan, the traditional Chinese abacus that has been used since the Song Dynasty. Unlike simpler counting tools, the suanpan is capable of performing complex arithmetic including multiplication, division, and even the extraction of square and cube roots. This concise manual provides clear instruction in the methods refined over centuries by abacus masters, making it both a historical reference and a functional manual for modern learners. The book will be carefully packaged for shipment for protection from the elements. Store description
Alien Bindings is an online bookshop located in Baltimore that has been in operation for nearly 20 years. Alien Bindings caters to the sciences including the physical sciences, astronomy, mathematics, computer science, the social sciences and medicine. I also dabble in a wide array of other categories including antiquarian books and history. I run a clean, green business. I try to reuse clean materials for packaging whenever possible. For example, books are carefully packaged frequently using clean cardboard for custom made boxes, recycled paper is used for printed labels and recycled plastic or bubble wrap is used for a weather-proof barrier. I drop the packages off to my local post office via foot or cycle in order to further reduce the carbon footprint.…
