Item description from seller

First Edition. in contemporary red half morocco over marbled boards, gilt rules along spine and corners, flat spine ruled and decorated in gilt, lettered in gilt, with the bookplate of George Bache Pappas and the booklabel of Jim Edwards. 8vo (187 x 115 mm), pp. xx, [2], 200, occasional blank pages, recto and verso, in text, some light browning, A very scarce literary compilation published by subscription as a fund-raiser. As a note after the title informs us, ?As the Profits arising from the Sale of this Book are intended for the Relief of the French Clergy, Refugees in the British Dominions, it is hoped the Endeavour will meet with Success from the charitable disposition of a generous Public? (Advertisement). Judging from the extensive list of subscribers, the author appears to have had a large and supportive acquaintance. It is a rather grand list, including two members of the royal family (who take seven copies between them) and a good representation from the aristocracy and the church (seven reverends). It is also a predominantly female list, with seventy female subscribers out of a total 101, an unusually high proportion and one suggestive, perhaps, of female authorship. With a dedication to Mr Montgomery, claiming to have been inspired by his recent pleas for ?the Cause of the unhappy Exiles?, this is a fascinating example of the English response to the plight of refugees and to an eighteenth century crowd fundraiser. The texts included in the work are a variety of occasional verse and moral guidance, with such pieces as ?The Creator, to be remembered in Time of Youth?; ?Against Strife and Enmity?; ?On Time?; ?On Patience and Resignation?; ?On Friendship?; ?On Recovering from Sickness?; ?Lines Addressed to a beloved Brother?; ?Contemplation of a Locket?; ?Sonnet to Hope?; ?Thoughts at Sunrise?; ?To a Tear?; ?On Gaming?; ?On Suicide?; ?On Revenge?; ?On a Faded Rose? and ?On Contemplating a Family Picture, sonnet to Conjugal Happiness?
