This is the first complete biography of Sir John Franklin whose tragic death on his final Arctic expedition ended a brilliant career as a naval officer, explorer and administrator. Franklin made his last Arctic expedition in 1845 in search of a North-West Passage and three years later the crew of the expedition had disappeared. Franklin joined the navy at age 15 and his first voyage was to Australia. He later saw action at Copenhagen, Trafalgar, New Orleans. Following the war with France, Franklin turned his seafaring skills to the scientific branch of the navy and for the next twelve years focused on arctic exploration. Following an appointment as Governor of what is now Tasmania, Franklin embarked on his final voyage to the arctic. Illustrated with line drawings and maps. 293 pages. Seller Inventory # 24187
