1822. First edition - volume 3 only (of 3). [ii], 299pp. plus a 1 page publisher's catalogue. Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) was a prolific Anglo-Irish writer of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe. Her best known works today are possibly 'Castle Rackrent' and 'The Absentee'. For sale is the third volume only of the story of Frank, one of the characters in her earlier work 'Early Lessons', from seven years old, till between ten and eleven. The book is bound in contemporary green quarter leather over marbled boards with a paper title label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected signs of the age. The boards have shelf wear with soiling and the corners are bumped with damage and some loss to the paper covering the corner tips. There is some damage and a little loss to the leather on the bottom rear spine corner and about 1/8" is missing from the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and some light foxing on the title-page and last page. There is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper. Seller Inventory # gNet092
