[RARE c.1795 STANDALONE GEORGIAN SPORTING BOOK - IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS] Extracted and updated from Nicholas Cox's classic 1674 work "The Gentleman's Recreation". --- FULL TITLE: The Fowler. Containing Rules for Taking Every Species of Land and Water Fowl; Whether by Fowling Piece, Net, Engine, or otherwise. Likewise, Instructions for the Choice and Training of the Dogs for Fowling; Remedies for their Diseases, &c. &c. Also, A Concise Essay on Song Birds. --- PUBLICATION & SCARCITY: London: Printed for J. Smeeton, 148, St. Martin's Lane, Charing Cross, undated as issued [circa 1795]. This is the very scarce second separate edition published as a standalone book, following the first separate issue by J. Dixwell in 1780. --- COLLATION & FORMAT: Octavo (8vo). pp. ii + 76. Complete with the highly important 5 pages of publisher's advertisements at the very rear. --- LUXURY PRESENTATION & PROVENANCE: Housed in a custom, modern slim clamshell presentation box beautifully covered in deep blue buckram with elegant gilt titles to the spine. Features the prestigious armorial bookplate of the celebrated sporting library collector Douglas Peter Crossman affixed to the inside of the box lid. --- CONDITION REPORT: Good to Very Good. The blue buckram presentation box is in very good condition with just a little light rubbing to the corners. The softcover book itself survives in its original blue paper covers, showing expected age-chipping and small historic tears to the outer edges of the pages. Text block exhibits mild, sporadic foxing throughout, which is slightly heavier to the first and last pages. Note: There is a faint, historic aroma of pipe smoke to the paper stock, as is common with old sporting library items. A lovely, completely untouched example of a very scarce Georgian wing-shooting piece with wonderful collector pedigree.…
