Item description from seller

186 pp. with B/W and full-colour illustrations, as well as a bibliography. Text in English and French. No dust jacket. Slight edgewear with some faint scratches to black cloth binding. "In 1710 four Iroquois sachems were brought to London and presented to Her Majesty Queen Anne as kings of the Five Nations Confederacy of North America. They had come to ask for missionaries to instruct their people and for military aid to defend themselves against the French. Indians had been seen in London before, but not as royalty on a state visit. They were a great popular success. Queen Anne commissioned John Verelst to paint full-length portraits, which were quickly mezzotinted and widely distributed, along with prints after other portraits of the Indians. The kings’ Speech to Her Majesty was issued in broadside form, as were other publications concerning them. The most popular of these was an anonymous ballad, which celebrates the hopeless love of one of the Indian kings for an English lady, who spurns him because he is not a Christian. This ballad, with its successful combination of piety and exotic love, continued to be published long after the kings’ visit had faded from memory. … Four sachems were chosen, three of them Mohawks. Their names were Etow Oh Koam (baptized Nicholas) of the Turtle Clan; Sa Ga Yeath Qua Pieth Tow (baptized Brant), grandfather of the famous Joseph Brant, of the Bear Clan; Ho Nee Yeath Taw No Row (baptized John) and Tee Yee Neen Ho Ga Row (baptized Hendrick), both of the Wolf Clan. In THE FOUR KINGS OF CANADA, printed and sold by John Baker in 1710 at the Black Boy on Pater-Noster-Row, we learned that they ruled all the nations northwest of the Iroquois river right up to Lake Erie and the great nation of the Hurons. … This … is what I feel is the first attempt at a short history of the kings, stressing their connection with the society for the propagation of the gospel, together with a bibliographical record of the works concerning them: the accounts, the ballad (in broadside and chapbook), the speech, the contemporary works, and the portraits, along with the location of the documents in British, American and Canadian institutions." - John G. Garratt. Heavy book may require additional shipping.…
