About this Item
PLATONOV, Andrei, [Foundation Pit] in [Grani] #70, Postverlagsort, Frankfurt/Main, February 1969. TP + [3] - 216. Octavo. FIRST APPEARANCE.The first appearance of The Foundation Pit. The story appears on pages 3 - 107 of Grani and illustrates the experiences of forced collectivization under Stalin. "Enthusiasts of a world commune plan to build a home for the world proletariat, a kind of socialist paradise [the Crystal Palace as envisioned by Nikolai Chernyshevsky in What Is To Be Done?]. But in fact they are merely digging a pit, a huge common grave for mankind of the future, because from its very inception the idea of this mad utopia is based on violence and death to those who are called bourgeois, kulaks, kulaks helpers, etc., in the name of those who are declared bearers of class truth " (Handbook of Russian Literature, p. 342). While much of the "action" occurs within the consciousnesses of the characters, the story borders on philosophy and existentialism, exploring the inevitable tensions that emerge between the free individual and the collectivized state: Some individuals emerge strong, others dissolve. Platonov himself believed in the humane possibilities of socialism, but saw the dehumanization of Stalin s efforts leading inevitably to failure. Part of what is considered by some to be Platonov s philosophical trilogy, including Chevengur and Soul.CONDITION: Very good to near fine in original publisher s wrappers. No markings.
