They Fought with What They Had by Walter D. Edmonds is a gripping military history that chronicles the desperate, chaotic defense of the Philippines and Java by the U.S. Army Air Forces during the opening months of World War II (December 1941 ? May 1942). Following the devastating Japanese surprise attacks that wiped out most of their fleet on the ground, outnumbered American pilots and mechanics were forced into a brutal fighting retreat with zero reinforcements. Relying on sheer improvisation, the men jury-rigged damaged B-17s and P-40s with salvaged parts and makeshift fuel, ultimately sacrificing their aircraft?and often fighting as infantrymen?in a crucial holding action that slowed the enemy advance and bought the Allies vital time to protect Australia.
