The Fortunes of Colonel Torlogh O'Brien (First Edition) A firm beautiful square copy. Bright cover and gilt. Owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Toning to verso of plates. No jacket present. Published anonymously, but credited to Le Fanu. Publication date on title page. Brown leather with decorative gilt tooling. All edges gilt; brown endpapers. 342 pp. Etched frontispiece and 21 plates by Phiz, rebound in polished calf, spine gilt, gilt edges, by Larkin. First edition in book form of Le Fanu's second novel, originally published in parts by McGlashan between April 1846 and January 1847. According to Brown, The fortunes of Colonel Torlogh O'Brien is considered to be among the three or four best Irish historical novels. Set at the turn of the century, it includes an account of the causes of the Jacobite downfall, descriptions of James's Court at Dublin and a fine description of Aughrim. "There are excellent pictures of scenery, and some skillful though roughly drawn character sketches. The action closes shortly after the Treaty of Limerick" -Brown, Ireland in fiction, 905.
