Item description from seller

143, [1] pp. 10.25" x 7.25" STEINBECK'S SCREENPLAY Fresh from the extraordinary success of The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck turned to cinema for The Forgotten Village, his first work written directly for the screen. Set in rural Mexico, the story pits inherited folk practices against modern medicine as contaminated water brings illness to an isolated community. Published by Viking in May 1941, the book transforms the film into a remarkable photographic narrative illustrated with 136 production stills. An overlooked but revealing experiment in documentary realism from one of America's central twentieth-century writers. Some offsetting to endpapers, light toning extremities, more so to spine, near fine in lightly worn and faintly chipped dust jacket in mylar cover. Tan coarse cloth, illustratively stamped in green, in illustrated dust jacket ($2.50).
