About this Item
1883 and 1884. First edition as bound volumes. viii, 462pp.; viii, 460pp., and many black and white illustrations (mostly in-text but some full-page). 'Forestry - A Magazine for the Country' was a monthly publication, largely devoted to forestry and arboriculture. It also contained a wide range of other articles relating to nature and the countryside, both in Britain and overseas, together with letters from readers and reviews of books. It was formerly published under the title 'The Journal of Forestery and Estate Management - A Monthly Illustrated Magazine Devoted to the Science and Practice of Arboriculture an the General Management of Estates'. Unfortunately we have been unable to find any information about its length of publication. It was edited by Francis George Heath (1843-1913), born in Totnes, Devonshire. He Entered the Civil Service in 1862, was the pioneer of the open space movement, and laboured many years for preservation of open spaces in and around London. He also assisted in the preservation of Epping Forest, 1872-1878. He published many books on the countryside and also wrote numerous letters and articles on the subject. The book for sale contains volumes VII and VIII of the magazine, consisting of the issues from May to October 1883 and October to April 1884. The book is bound in contemporary half leather over marbled paper covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of rhe book is in very good condition with shelf wear to the marbled paper on the boards and some scuffing to the leather. The scuffing is mostly noticeable on the spine which is also slightly faded. There is a little damage with a small bit of loss to the leather on parts of both ends of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with browning and foxing to the endpapers. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy book and extra postage will apply for delivery outside the UK.
