For every Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle voyage into outer space, there is an accompanying story. For every mission, there is the story of a starry-eyed child transformed into Alan Shepard, John Glenn, or Neil Armstrong. For every astronaut who braved weightlessness, the unknown, the perils of space flight, there is a grown up child wishing he or she could do the same. You'll remember you own youthful dreams during a bygone time in America when space flight bewitched us all and changed a generation.

From the Author
Hi: Close your eyes and go back in time to 1961,to the flight of astronaut Alan Shepard aboard Freedom 7. Remember how you felt as you watched that huge rocket soar through the big blue sky and disappear into outer space. I'll bet you became an astronaut that day; so did I. About a zillion little kids raced around crazily, determined to join NASA, determined to become an astronaut. We did crazy things to fuel our dreams: we built pretend space capsules out of dad's refrigerator box. We stayed up all night watching Walter Cronkite recount the details of the flights of Gemini 7, Apollo 7, Friendship 7. We launched model rockets, pretending we were NASA flight director Chris Kraft. We posted pictures on our bedroom walls of all the astronauts. We collected space pogs. We just wanted to soar in space, because we were wide-eyed little guys and gals forever captured by the romance and mystery of stars and space and capsules and space men. We watched Neil Armstrong make a dusty footprint on the Moon; we took our arthritic GI Joe Mercury Astronaut and walked him around our backyards as if HE were on the dusty lunar landscape. Essentially, we did anything we could to vicariously lead the lives of astronauts because that's what space voages did for us: they made us young at heart, made us hopeful. Made us believers in ourselves. "Fly Me To The Moon" is unlike any book on space exploration you will ever read. This is OUR book, yours and mine. You and me, the little kids who grew up with NASA, Project Mercury, and became adults who still could not get enough of launches and landings. This is your book because you wanted to be an astronaut (probably still do), just like I did. For every launch, every walk on the Moon, we hold a memory dear to our hearts. Perhaps you recall what you were doing and how you felt the night Apollo 8 circled the Moon. Maybe you still shiver when you see a giant shuttle leap off the pad. You feel five years old again, don't you. You're back in front of a black and white TV, watching the Mercury astronauts prove to us that if we could soar into space, we could do anything we want. You and I are grown up now, but through space flight we can remain forever young at heart. "Fly Me To The Moon" will restore your youth, make you laugh, make you cry. Most important, it will remind you why astronauts and space missions have been so important to you and to the rest of us. Soar wil me back into outer space; leave behind your mortgage, your job, your cares for just awhile and journey back to Cape Canaveral to take your own personal mission into space. Within these pages you will remain a hopeful child, captivated by your own space mission. I've enjoyed the mission, so will you. I look forward to joining you in low earth orbit. Yours, Bryan Ethier
