Add to basketThis is a scarce first edition copy of "The Floating Island - or, The Pearl of the Pacific" by JULES VERNE. 1897 1st American edition; W.L. Allison Company; New York. (The book is undated, though W.L. Allison published the book in November, 1897.) The book is richly illustrated with dozens of full-page plates. Note - all illustrations are present as called for, though their placement in the book doesn't always coincide with the page number listed in the "List of Illustrations." This is the first and only illustrated American edition of the novel. Bound in original publisher's pictorial cloth, as issued. From a review: "A French string quartet travelling from San Francisco to their next engagement in San Diego is diverted to Standard Island. Standard Island is an immense man-made island designed to travel the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The wealth of residents on the island can only be measured in millions. The quartet is hired to play a number of concerts for the residents during their tour of the islands (Sandwich, Cook, Society, etc.) of the South Pacific. The island seems an idyllic paradise; however, it is an island divided in two. The left half's population is led by Jem Tankerdon and is known as the Larboardites. The right half's population is led by Nat Coverley and is known as the Starboardites. Despite the obstacles encountered on their journey, the two parties have a disagreement that threatens the future of the island itself." Condition: Clean front cover; light soiling to the back cover; some mottling to the cloth on the spine. 1/3" cloth tear at the top-left corner of the spine. Sharp cover corners. There is a hinge crack at the front between pages 8 & 9 resulting in the front cover being shaky; the back cover is securely attached. There are a couple small tears to the paper along the hinge between the front end paper and paste down. The front end paper has 2 names stamped in ink, and the top-right corner has torn away. The outer corners of the rear end paper have torn away. The text pages have occasional smudges, stains, and tears; pages 345-347 and a few of the illustrated pages at the back have foxing at the outer edge (the illustrations are unaffected). The illustration after page 282 is detached and has tears at the outer edges and a crease at the inner edge. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
