From the Author
Aviation touches us all. In the U.S. alone, 1.5 million peoplefly the airlines every day. And not a day passes without an airline story on TV and in the headlines. Little wonder, when the cabin door shuts and the engines start to whine, people ask themselves -- who's really in charge here? Who am I entrusting myself, my family to? The fact is, airlines move enormous numbers of passengers quickly and safely. With all the complaints -- and we each have our own personal gripes -- we take this marvelous human enterprise for granted. We also tend to forget that the technological wizardry of air travel is no better than the dedication and care of the human beings who operate it. In contrast with current airline "disaster" fiction which centers on the spectacular event, FLIGHT PATH shows what makes the airlines tick in the good times and the bad. FLIGHT PATH puts the reader on the front line beside airline personnel, challenged daily to provide safe aircraft, trained crews and maintain on-time performance in every kind of weather, all under the extremities of cost-control pressure and the threat of terrorism. The people are the real story. These are impressive performers -- imperfect, but impressive. That the airline employee does his job so well, day in and day out, is one theme of my novel. What compromises companies make in the name of business and economics, is another theme, a cautionary one. In FLIGHT PATH, one of the world's great airlines, New York's BellAir, fights for survival in the fiercely competitive deregulated era. Charlie Bell, last of the original airline founders, confronted with menancing new forms of business warfare, sees his fabulous career drawing to a close, and hires Philip Hartley, an intense young Wall Street financier to help him save BellAir. Across the country, Frank Delgado, the tireless owner of Monterey's Bay Airlines, is caught between the need to ally himself with BellAir and the risk of his company being swallowed by the giant. Bell's wife Dee mistrusts Hartley and his slick, manipulative wife Elaine. What neither knows about is Hartley's liaison with a company fight attendant, which leads them all into dangerous territory. FLIGHT PATH is being called an "airborne Bonfire of the Vanities" and a "must read" for all who fly. It's an absorbing tale of ambition, sabotage, strikes, takeovers and dynamic, driven personalities, with repercussions for everyone who boards a plane. I hope you order a copy of FLIGHT PATH, read it with pleasure and tell your friends about it. I'd like to hear from you, know what you think about the story and the issues it raises -- please note our e-mail address.
