After taking a job under an assumed identity at a brickyard in a district forbidden to Jews, Bok is falsely accused of the ritual murder of a young Russian boy. Imprisoned without formal trial, subjected to relentless psychological pressure and pushed to confess in order to justify state-sponsored pogroms, Bok mounts an unrelenting resistance against institutional oppression. Farrar, Straus and Giroux published the novel in New York in 1966, w/ jacket design by Janet Halverson and book design by Marshall Lee. The narrative draws directly on the historical 1911-1913 trial of Menahem Mendel Beilis in Kiev, which Bernard Malamud structures into a philosophical exploration of freedom, state corruption and individual conscience. The novel won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 1967 National Book Award for Fiction. Bernard Malamud (1914-1986) was a central figure in post-war American literature, known for novels and short story collections exploring moral accountability, immigrant identity and the Jewish-American experience. Across his career Malamud received two National Book Awards, the Pulitzer Prize and the O. Henry Award. His work is read alongside that of his contemporaries Saul Bellow and Philip Roth, and The Fixer is studied today across Jewish-American literary history and mid-century American fiction. …
