Since the great Isaac Walton's classic Compleat Angler first appeared in the mid-seventeenth century, fishermen have struggled with pen and paper to explain their reasons for pursuing their sport. In this remarkable collection of anglers' tales, Tom Quinn, editor of Country, has brought together the best and most enduring stories of the past two centuries, though concentrating on the heyday of angling writing, the years 1880 to 1910.
Here are accounts of giant fish lost after epic battles; strange and ghostly happenings by the riverside; a triumphant first day's salmon fishing at a time when our rivers were still sparklingly clean; gudgeon fishing parties on the Thames and a Christmas morning chubbing; and tales of magnificent sea bass being taken from the surf, and of a huge carp being hooked from a deep, lily-covered pond.
In this wide-ranging anthology, tales of game, coarse and sea fishing are intermixed, the pleasures of the deep juxtaposed with somnolent days on the river. Both well-known writers, such as J.H.R. Bazeley, T.H. White and H.T. Sheringham, and long-forgotten voices of the past have been included. Illustrated with black and white paintings, photographs and engravings, this book recalls a golden age of fishing, and will be read with pleasure in the close season and at the day's end when the rod once again lies idle.
