About this Item

Description:

2°, folded double sheet, printed on one side only. This is the first number of the first English-speaking Nigerian newspaper (and the third West African newspaper overall, after Charles Bannerman's Accra Herald in 1858 and Iwe Irohin in 1859. Campbell was a Jamaican-born Person of Color who had planned to found a colony for Black American emigrants in West Africa, but instead settled in Lagos and founded this newspaper, which appeared for three years. Exceedingly rare, no paper copy recorded in institutional libraries. The only copy of the newspaper I could find in public sales was no. 10 (Aug. 8, 1863), sold by Swann Galleries in 2008 for USD 6.240. Seller Inventory # ABE-1693483451462
