Hew Strachan's The First World War (2003) is widely regarded as one of the best single-volume histories of WWI, praised for its clarity, global scope, and ability to challenge clichés about the conflict. Strachan argues that the war was not simply futile slaughter led by incompetent generals. He shows how it was a global conflict long before U.S. involvement, with decisive campaigns in Africa, the Balkans, and the Ottoman Empire. He emphasizes that liberal countries saw the war as a defence of freedoms, not just imperial rivalry. Black boards with silver text to spine, wrapped in dust jacket. Clean unmarked pages. Excellent copy.
