About this Item

Description:

First British edition, first impression, of the lunar dystopian novel adapted for film in 1919, 1964, and 2010. "The last of what are generally thought of as his greatest scientific romances", it describes the "society of the Selenites, who have suffered a process of evolution that has swelled their brains and atrophied the rest" (SFE). This copy is in the first issue binding of dark blue cloth stamped in gilt and with black endpapers. The story was serialized in Cosmopolitan and The Strand prior to publication in book form. The American edition of October precedes this British edition of November. Currey, p. 518; Locke I, p. 226. Octavo. Frontispiece and 11 plates by Claude Shepperson. Original blue cloth, lettering and device on spine and front cover in gilt, black coated endpapers.
