Add to basketStated First Edition. First American. Rare, rare book. One 'rare' for each of the two others for sale. But here with this listing is the Only dust jacket! The book is rated only Good Minus and the price reflects that. The covers are in quite decent shape. You can see them in the photos. The gilt lettering on the front is mostly bright, there's a little fade in a few of the letters. On the spine, the design below the author's name is lightly faded as well. The edges and corners, remarkably, are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The spine ends have the customary crinkling, but nothing more than that. The top page edge is some color that seems familiar, maybe a light aquamarine or something like that. It's quite clean. So are the middle and bottom page edges which are deckled or rough-cut. The spine is slanted rearward, but the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There are no cracks or spaces to be found between any of the pages or between the covers and any of the pages The inside covers and end papers are an interesting green and white design, quite warm and appealing. However, there are small holes, a half-dozen of them on the front end paper just adjacent to the juncture with the inside cover. And of course you can see the same holes on the other side, the blank verso of the illustrated front end paper. The front inside end paper also has a vertical tan shading, looks like a bookplace may have been left there. The next few pages look very good, including the title page. But then are a few small tan spots off the bottom edge of the next few pages, and then there are some small tan spots on the following few pages, along with a hole at the margin of page 9-10 an 11-12 . I really can't say what caused that, it doesn't look like the shape of an insect's supper. There are no more holes into you reach page 25-26 where there is a small surface erosion, at the bottom corner, and then there are no more holes until you reach page 51. On page 51-52 and 53-54 there is a small hole off the outer edge alongside some of the same erosion/abrasion of the paper there. There do not appear to be any other instances of holes anywhere else in the book. Also, none of the holes reach or touch the print. I've provided a photograph of the worst of it (soiling and holes) from page 10-11. A handful of these early pages also have a light top corner crease. Page 23 also has a jagged outer edge. The areas around the bottom corners pages 37 to 41 do have some surface erosion (and a couple of pinpricks on page 41. Pages in the 40s, 50s, and 60s have a crease just below the top corner. And then the condition of the pages improves markedly. I don't see any conspicuous wear on any of the rest of the pages ( I'll just amend that to say that there are three very tiny losses at the bottom edge of one page, not erosion, not holes). I am seeing an occasional spot of soiling off the bottom edge of a page, but not too many. You can just make out faded stamped numbers on one of the blank rear end papers, something from a bookseller I imagine. There are no other markings anywhere in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. I'll be much shorter with the dust jacket because you can see the photos. Losses at the top edge of the spine, small ones in other places., Also some paper erosion off the bottom edge of the rear cover and a tear off the top edge of the rear cover. Also a few thin tears off the top and bottom edges of the front cover. All of it visible in the photos. The flaps have a bit of light spotting, all four corners have tucking-in clips, but the price is present and unaffected. I've always had the jacket in a fitted protective cover. From the dust jacket: 'First Love cannot fail to justify the boundless enthusiasm with which public and critics alike have invariably welcomed the novels of E. M. Delafield.'.
