Item description from seller

Middletown, Connecticut: Wesleyan University, 1935. First edition, 1935. Marbled hardcover with black cloth spine, paper spine label, 261 pages. Some shelfwear, mainly rubbing along the edges, good hinges, firm binding, very clean pages free from names or other markings, numerous pages unopened at the outer edges. Very clean copy. Ever wanted to know when "the pen is mightier than the sword" or "all quiet along the Potomac" was first introduced in print? This is the book for you. In 1935, the Olin Memorial Library at Wesleyan exhibited four hundred such examples of familiar quotations and their first print appearances, and published this book in conjunction with the exhibit. For the curious: Edward Bulwer-Lytton in Richelieu, 1839; Ethelinda (Elliot) Beers in Songs of the War, 1863. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
