First edition. Thomas Doubleday (1790-1870) was an influential figure in the Chartist movement in the early 1830s, thereafter becoming more conservative. The present book, taking the form of letters to young scholars of economics, is a wide-ranging and opinionated study of the nature of money and of the national debt, covering the development of the British economy over the previous century and a half, including the establishment of the Bank of England and of paper money.
