Item description from seller

[10], 230 pages. Index. Some creasing to DJ. Robert Peter Gale (born October 11, 1945) is an American physician and medical researcher. He is known for research in leukemia and other bone marrow disorders (such as aplastic anemia). From 1973-1993, Gale was on the faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine where he focused on the molecular biology, immunology and treatment of leukemia. He also developed the bone marrow transplant program supported by the NIH. From 1980-1997, Gale was Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), an organization of more than 400 transplant centers in over 60 countries worldwide working together to analyze and advance knowledge about blood cell and bone marrow transplants. In 1989-2003 Gale chaired the Scientific Advisory Board of the Center for Advanced Studies in Leukemia. From 1986-1993, Gale was President of the Armand Hammer Center for Advanced Studies in Nuclear Energy and Health. In 1986, he was asked by the government of the Soviet Union to coordinate medical relief efforts for victims of the Chernobyl disaster. A startling look at the incident at Chernobyl, from the heroic American doctor who led an international team of doctors there to treat the victims. A doctor at the site of the explosion of the Unit 4 nuclear reactor at Chernobyl discusses the tragedy, the diseases it will trigger, the environmental damage caused on a global scale and the hope it offers for a safer world. Derived from a Kirkus review: This is a gripping memoir of the experiences of Dr. Gale, America's foremost authority on the treatment of radiation-accident victims, recounting his post-Chernobyl mission to save the lives of Russians in the wake of the most serious nuclear accident up to that time. With its immediacy of reporting and strong cautionary message, this compelling account deserves a wide and attentive audience.
